Ottomar Anschütz was a German photographer, renowned for his advancements in high-speed and motion photography. In the 1880s, he developed fast shutters that captured images at 1/1000th of a second, allowing him to photograph rapid movements with unprecedented clarity. Among his notable works is a series of photographs featuring taxidermied animals in lifelike settings with painted backdrops and props to simulate their natural habitats. These images demonstrate his technical prowess as well as his dedication to blend scientific inquiry with artistic expression.

Ottomar Anschütz made significant contributions to the realms of early motion picture and high-speed photography, gaining renown for his expertise in capturing swift move- ments of both animals and humans. Among his notable works, the eight photographs in this series depict taxidermied ani- mals within carefully arranged settings, including painted backgrounds and various props, closely simulating their natural habitats. – A few minimal surface scuff marks/slight surface soiling, otherwise in very good condition. Apart from Anschütz's usual movement studies, this group also includes two more modernly cropped studies of horse and rider. – Some surface scuff marks, some handling marks, a few with minimal foxing/toning in edges, one faded, otherwise in very good condition.
